Oily Skin Remedies: Less is More

Oily Skin Remedies: Less is More

Have you ever cleansed your skin more than twice in a day to help remove excess oil? You could be doing more harm than good. People often compensate for having excessively oily skin by overusing certain skin care products and routines. However, too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. When you overuse a product, it can often lead to even more oil, shine and congestion. That's why it's critical to find the best products for oily skin, and use them correctly. If you want to read about oily skin remedies that work, then read here.

Exfoliating can help improve congestion caused by excess oil, but if you scrub too often, you can actually cause injury to the skin. This injury occurs if you don't give your skin a chance to recover and renew between each exfoliation. Once the skin recognizes it's injured, it will produce even more oil to compensate and protect itself. Aim to exfoliate your oily skin no more than 1-2 times a week.

Even if you're not using an exfoliator too often, you might be scrubbing too hard. Using too much pressure while scrubbing can actually spread bacteria and cause PIH (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation), breakouts and, of course, more oil production. Don't push the product too hard on your skin – the product will do the work for you, so all you need is a light touch.

Even over cleansing your skin can cause a similar injury to over exfoliating.  While you may think you need to cleanse away all your oil multiple times though the day, the skin still needs oil to stay protected and healthy. When you over cleanse, you'll strip your skin and dehydrate it, causing your skin to respond with a surge of more oil to compensate for what's been stripped away.

Spot Treatments

The truth is, overusing any skin care product can cause issues, even if excessively oily skin isn't your main concern. If you have acne breakouts, and apply a topical medication too frequently, you can strip away the protective barrier that your skin needs, and cause irritation, dryness, oil, and even more breakouts. Read the directions on the label and follow them carefully.

Follow product directions closely so you don't strip away what healthy skin needs! If you're using your products correctly, but you still have oily skin one of these surprising factors might be to blame.
