All About Multi-Masking + Mixing Skin Care

This post is brought to you by our Esthetics Experts Panel, composed of skin care professionals, educators + authorities with decades of experience in the industry.

Can your skin enjoy even more benefits when you combine your cleanser and exfoliator? Have you ever heard of a double face mask or 'multi-masking'? These techniques can double up your skin benefits, save you time, and help you target specific skin concerns. Read on to learn how to multi-mask and combine other skin care products to get maximum benefits from your skin care routine.

multi-masking

There are several different ways to double or multi-mask, and every way has its own benefits and purpose. You can try any of these the next time you decide to carve out some TLC!

apply masks back to back

Layer certain masks together to help buffer stronger masks to make them more comfortable while still receiving the full benefits.

If you have sensitive skin, apply a small amount of Collagen Rehab to the entire face. Then layer Kerafole directly on top. The Collagen Rehab will buffer the Kerafole for clients who have dehydrated skin.

apply masks back to back

Apply one mask following the directions on the package and then immediately follow with another mask to receive the benefits of both.

If you have sensitive skin and experience breakouts frequently, use Measured Micrograins + followed by Amino Mask. Follow the directions on both packages. The non-irritating exfoliation action of Measured Micrograins + will clear away dead cells and allow the OTC ingredients in Amino Mask to penetrate pores deeply without irritating the skin.

spot treat with different masks

You can use as many different masks as you want to target each specific concern. Just make sure to not leave any of them on longer than the time listed in the directions for each.

If you have an oily, congested t-zone and dry skin around the outside of your face you can apply Restorative Clay to your t-zone and Collagen Rehab to the outer section. Restorative Clay will vacuum up the oil and dirt, while Collagen Rehab will lubricate the dry skin.

For tired, puffy eyes and dull, sagging skin apply Radiance Rescue under the eyes and on cheeks and Collagen Rehab over the forehead, nose and chin for a dewy, glowing complexion.

Do you have a congested t-zone and sapped skin? Apply Radiance Rescue to under eyes and cheeks to revitalize and reveal radiance and Restorative Clay to t-zone to vacuum out dirt and debris.

skin care mixes

Aside from multi-masking, there are many different ways to combine your skin care to double the benefits and streamline your routine.

Please note that all mixing recommendations below are for products within the Bioelements line. We strongly advise to always use skin care products from the same professional brand. All of Bioelements formulas are designed to work together with compatible ingredients. When you mix together different skin care lines, you increase the risk of a negative reaction, or loss of effectiveness.

mask + cleanser

If you don't have enough time for a facial mask, get a small dose of your favorite supercharged ingredients by mixing your mask in with your cleanser.

If your skin is dull, congested and needs a jump-start, add a small amount of Kerafolewith the white spatula that comes in the box to 2 pumps of Moisture Positive Cleanser to create a stimulating, creamy clay cleanser for dry skin types. Blend together until smooth, then apply and massage over skin with wet hands using circular motions for 1 minute.

If you have simultaneously oily and dehydrated skin, mix Ultra-Rich CremeTherapy with Decongestant Cleanser. Blend together in the same way you would with Kerafole and Moisture Positive Cleanser.

exfoliator + cleanser

Create an exfoliating cleanser easily at home. "Not only will this save you time by combining two steps of your skin care routine, but it also adds an extra cushion to your exfoliator, which is great when you want extra gentle, but effective exfoliation," shares Teresa Stenzel, licensed esthetician and member of our Esthetics Experts Panel.

Pumice Peel and Measured Micrograins + can also be blended with Moisture Positive Cleanser, Decongestant Cleanser or Sensitive Skin Cleansing Oil

Add a small amount of the exfoliator with the white spatula that comes in the box to 2 pumps of your Bioelements cleanser in the palm of your hand. Blend together until smooth, then apply to your face and massage with wet hands using circular motions and light pressure for 1 minute.

This is our favorite skin care shortcut, but make sure to avoid mixing your exfoliator with a cleanser that is already exfoliating, like Flash Foam Cleanser, or an OTC cleanser, like Spotless Cleanser.

serum + moisturizer

Add a pump of one of these problem solving serums into your daily moisturizer. This will create a skin care blend to save you time and target your top concerns.

Have dry, flaky and red skin from the long winter months? Create a soothing moisture cocktail by combining 2 pumps of Stress Solution with your daily moisturizer and blend in your hand with your fingers, then apply to entire face and neck.

Hi @Lily Shank, you can do that too as long as the serums can be worn at the same time of day (just look at the instructions for each) and have a similar consistency (if they have a much lighter consistency than the other, make sure to apply the lighter one first and then layer the thicker one on top so they both absorb properly). We can’t speak to other brands’ brightening formulas, but our LightPlex products can absolutely be worn in the morning. Each individual product on Bioelements.com has instructions on what time of day to use them – simply click on the product and scroll down to see. Hope that helps!

What about combining mutiple serums and problem solvers. I’m really interested in using the advanced vita mineral C complex and the lightplex megawatt skin brighter and moisture x10, can I layer those or put them on at different times? Are the brightened and the vitamin C complex okay to use in the morning or will that make my skin too sensitive to the sun? Thank you!

Hi Lacy, Not at all! The skin needs different things at different times of the year, etc. As long as you are using the appropriate cleanser for your skin type, then you certainly can go back and forth. Example: You could use Flash Foam at night to both cleanse and exfoliate your skin at the same time, and then use Decongestant Cleanser in the morning. The way you are doing it sounds fine as well.

I was wondering if there are any adverse reactions to switching between cleansers off and on? I have both the decongestant cleanser and the flash foam. Some days I will use one and other days I will use the other.

Thanks, Carley! It really all depends on YOUR skin’s concerns AND the sensitivity level of the skin, like the example we gave. You can mix it up also depending on how often you are going to do it. For example, you can “back to back” Measured Micrograins+ and then next mask that is right for your skin. And then another time, if your breakouts are more inflamed on your cheeks, exfoliate the rest of your face and then spot treat just on your cheeks with Amino Mask, Your skin will tell you what it needs. Just experiment and pay attention to the results. Also, be careful with your touch. Gentle is best!

How do you decide whether to use back to back or to spot treat your skin care? Is it just personal preference or is it determined by what your skin concerns are? Oh, the tip about blending your serum and moisturizer was great! I really appreciate all the helpful and educational tips Bioelements provides in addition to the great products.
