The 7 Skin Sins: Dehydration

We are in week 4 of the skin sins series – blog posts dedicated to discussing lifestyle habits that can wreak short- and long-term havoc on your skin. We've talked about some major no-no's so far, like sugar, skipping sleep, and smoking – but this week We're covering a somewhat trickier sin: dehydration.

Unlike a dry skin type that's chronically caused by a lack of skin lipids, dehydration is a temporary condition caused by lack of hydration or trans epidermal water loss (TEWL – where water molecules are lost via the epidermal layer of the skin). While it has many causes, dehydration only means one thing for your skin: discomfort. Inadequate hydration can lead to skin that feels dry and tight, and can eventually lead to a rough, scaly, flaky, or cracked texture. The difficult thing about quenching your skin's thirst is knowing what dehydrates it in the first place. Here are 4 things you might be doing to dry out your skin, and solutions for each of them:

1. You're going cleanser crazy.

Cleansers aren't one-size-fits all, and using one that strips your skin's protective hydrolipidic barrier away leaves you more vulnerable to TEWL. Know your skin type and choose a cleanser that's gentle enough for you, but still effective.

2. You've tuned out toner.

Toning your skin post-cleanse restores its natural pH, leaving it ready to absorb essential ingredients from the products that follow. Forgetting it can mean your skin doesn't reap all of the benefits a hydrating serum or moisturizer has to offer. At the same time, using harsh, alcohol-based toners can leave your skin thirsty. Use a water-based hydrating facial toner to replenish moisture and prep skin for the rest of your routine.

3. You've encountered medication dehydration.

Certain medications like decongestants can dehydrate you. Quench your thirst by upping your fluid intake and supercharging your daily skincare routine with a skin serumloaded with hyaluronic acid – a molecule that can hold up to 1000x its weight in water and bind it to the surface of your skin. Applied after your toner, it will help smooth and hydrate and even boost the efficiency of your moisturizer.

5. You're forgetting about your body!

Your skin doesn't stop below your neck, so why should your skin care? Smooth away dry, rough joints and get rid of dull skin cells with an ultra-rich body creme. Apply it just after you get out of the shower (remember to keep the water warm, not hot) so your skin stays smooth and protected throughout the day.

Could your skin use some extra hydration? Tell us your biggest skin sin in the comments below and stay tuned for another skin sin reveal next week!

I need more moisture because it is fall and very dry outside. Also, I have thyroid disease and it has really made my skin a lot drier. I could use a great, moisturizing body creme.

This time of year when we are all so busy, many of us remember to take care of our face, but carve out a few extra minutes by skipping body moisturizer — it’s easy to ignore when we are all bundled up in clothes. But winter is when you need that body moisturizer the most!!! I know I do!!

My skin stays dry no matter how much moisturizer I use. I live in FL where it’s tough to stay out of the sun, but I use sun protection. The skin on my arms and legs is the worst. Can’t seem to keep them moisturized at all. I use moisturizer on my face twice a day and it helps some, but not enough.

Dry winter sir is upon us, especially in South Dakota. With our morning lows in the subzero range (-20 where I live) my skin screams for added moisture. I welcome anything that gives my skin an extra drink of hydration to help relieve the chapped and sometimes burning sensation it experiences this time of year.

Im 33, and it seems like since I hit 30, everything is in a big hurry to go downhill. I just feel like Ive lost some of that glow and freshness to my skin, face and body. Im not sure anymore of what to try and do. A lot of washes I use leave my face dry and then the lotions to greasy. And I dont know where to start on body lotion. Im not asking for 22 yr old skin, but 26 would do :) Looks like more water it is! My biggest skin sin is sugar. Thanks!

These harsh and extremely drying winters in Minnesnowda, blasting artificial heat from a space heater to stay toasty when it drops below 0 at night, and with eczema and some meds, my skin is thirsty! These are just some of the reasons why I need some Bioelements! :) Your facial products are amazing and I’d love to try out some other body products. I bet this stuff is heaven! :)

Great information. I try to make sure to keep my face cleansed but I do not use a toner. I will consider it because I would like my skin to be brighter. I try to eat a good diet and am thankful for the advice.

You’ve already mentioned it above, but with the extremely cold weather especially this early in the season, I LOVE taking hot, hot showers which is so stripping to the skin! Gotta replenish after to make up for it!

I work in a hospital taking care of others all day. My own skin is often neglected and I am constantly using alcohol on my hands. This winter cold has given me dry, cracked skin on my legs, arms & hands. I could sure use some ultra rich body lotion this season!

I am still in school studying Esthetics. Tons of clients have been coming in lately very dry and dehydrated-so much of this is from artificial heat from the car and home. I’ve been recommending BioElements Moisture X10 and WOW what a difference…That product is a skin Miracle.
