The ‘Get Great Skin Series’ – Part 3: The Power of Touch in a Facial

3

It’s time for part 3 of our ‘Get Great Skin’ series. First, we looked closely at the structure of the skin, so we could help it function at its best. Next, we talked about applying the right amount of products – and how globbing on too much can do more harm than good. Now, it’s time to talk about hormones.

Hormones?

Yes. We want to talk about the hormones in your brain and body – the ones that control stress and happiness: norepinephrine and cortisol. They’re greatly affected when you receive a professional facial.

It’s true. Not only do regular skin care facials result in clearer skin due to professional exfoliating on an ongoing basis, and smoother, more radiant skin, but the esthetician’s massaging, soothing “touch” can greatly impact your body’s hormone levels for the better. Sure, machines can do great things in a facial, but touch must always be included.

Touch can increase your level of endorphins (the brain’s natural morphine), and release seratonin (a natural chemical that gives you a sense of well being – some call it the brain’s “happy chemical”). At the same time, levels of norepinephrine and cortisol – your body’s stress hormones – decrease. Anxiety is lessened, and the entire body can experience a feeling of healing from head-to-toe. The power of touch during a professional facial is soothing, comforting, and some studies show it can even benefit your immune system.

Your skin, too, will benefit from touch during a facial. Facial massage will nourish your skin through increased blood circulation, detoxify and stimulate muscles and tissues, helping to firm and tone. Skin will radiate and glow, and look healthier.

Worried about your esthetician wearing gloves during a facial? Don’t be. Gloves should fit like a second-skin, and will not affect nor impair the benefits of touch.

Have you felt the benefits of touch in a professional facial first-hand? The improved mood? The reduced stress levels? Let us know in the comments.
