We know there are a lot of intrinsic factors that age our skin that are largely uncontrollable, like genetics, but what about the external factors within our control? Keep reading to learn if you are prematurely aging your skin and how to slow it down.

Signs of Extrinsic Aging

Extrinsic aging is aging that is caused by external factors that are often within our control. The signs below are often a good indicator of extrinsic aging:

  • Irregular pigmentation, such as brown pigmented spots and uneven skin tone
  • Dry skin
  • Dehydration
  • Visible capillaries
  • Redness
  • Deep wrinkles

To prevent these signs from becoming worse and to prevent new ones from cropping up, you need to protect yourself and your skin from external aging factors like the ones listed below.

External factors that cause aging

1) Climate

If you live in a climate that has extremes in heat, cold, humidity or lack of, wind, etc, your skin is aging quicker than those who live in moderate climates. Weather is uncontrollable, but you can control how YOU respond to the weather. If you live in a climate that lacks humidity, buy a humidifier. If you deal with excessive sun, make sure to slather on RayDefense frequently. Make sure to protect your skin from the weather to keep your youthful glow.

2) Pollution

Dirt, smog, toxic gases, and free radicals can all become absorbed into your skin and speed up the natural aging process. To protect yourself from free radicals, use antioxidant skin care, like Plump Start or Advanced VitaMineral C Complex, to scavenge skin aging free radicals and prevent inflammation.

3) Poor nutrition/diet

Processed foods, foods high in sugar, sodium, and trans fats all wreak havoc on your health and your skin. Eating poorly degrades elastin and collagen, which are the proteins that keep skin soft and youthful.*

“A poor diet can cause dullness, puffiness, redness, congestion, acne and more!” –Rhonda Robb, Spa Sweet Studio at The Trove Salon

If you want to prevent premature aging and keep your skin clear and healthy, eating well is a must.

4) Medication

Certain medications can cause dehydration, increase sensitivity, and weaken the skin’s immune system, which all contribute to an aging appearance. If you have to take a medication that causes one of these symptoms, combat it by keeping your skin properly moisturized and detoxifying it regularly.

5) Stress

When you are stressed it triggers the stress hormone cortisol to increase, which affects sebum production, microcirculation and hydration levels. To prevent breakouts, excess oil, and faster aging, make sure to minimize your stress as best as possible.

6) Lifestyle habits

There are some obvious bad habits that age you quicker, like tanning and smoking, but there are some surprising ones too, like using makeup wipes to remove makeup. Learn what bad habits to ditch and which to keep for youthful skin.
