New Year, New Skin

When it comes to New Year resolutions, I’m not a fan of hard and fast rules that can leave you feeling restricted and deprived. Instead, we like to start the New Year off with a fresh set of goals and reminders to keep us on the right track. And, just like you can resolve to start a new diet or set a new budget, our resolutions are all about getting new skin.

1.       Get regular facials. There are a number of skin and body benefits that come from getting regular professional facials. Let’s start with the basic facts: no one knows skin care products like a spa professional. They have access to professional-strength formulas that consumers don’t – and have years of training and education in physiology, biology and treatment techniques that can transform your skin.  The professional exfoliation you get in a facial can result in smoother, more radiant skin, and regular facials also allow your spa pro to get to really know your skin – how it changes from month to month, season to season, and as you age. The relationship you form with a spa professional can help you overcome cyclical changes and stressors that can throw your complexion out of balance. Make it a New Year resolution to schedule a regular facial so you can keep your skin, mind, and body healthy. Use the spa locator to find a Bioelements spa near you!

2.       Sweat out stress.  Stress is a significant contributor to problematic skin. Cortisol, “the stress hormone”, tells your skin to produce more skin-clogging sebum and, as a result, your skin can breakout. Although it might seem counter intuitive, sweating it out actually improves your skin! The Mayo Clinic reported that regular exercise can lower symptoms associated with mild depression and anxiety, as well as help you sleep better. Collectively, these help lower stress levels and can keep stress breakouts at bay. Just be careful! Wearing tight clothing during a workout and not cleansing afterward can lead to breakouts so keep your threads loose and use a cleanser designed for your skin type to make sure you aren’t reversing all of your hard work!

3.       Don’t skimp on sleep.  We just mentioned that losing sleep can up your stress level and, in turn, cause breakouts, but that’s not all it does! A study published in the British Medical Journal reported that sleep deprivation shows on your face. When asked to look at pictures of sleep-deprived faces, study participants noted that they looked fatigued, and not as healthy or attractive. When you sleep, cortisol levels are low while growth hormone peaks to help your body repair damaged cells. Skimping on sleep, or waking up throughout the night, can put stress on the body that can translate into fatigued and stress skin. Make a skin-saving New Year resolution to get your beauty sleep this year.

4.       Stick to one brand. Hearing about the latest so-called “miracle products” make it tempting to deviate from your daily skin care routine, but be warned, they could hurt, not help your skin. A professional skin care line like Bioelements specifically formulates products to work well together to achieve the best results.  Mixing and matching products from multiple lines can lead to ineffective results and potential skin irritation. With each of these reminders in place for the New Year, you’ll be on the fast-track to new skin in no time. What are your New Year Resolutions? Let ua know in the comments!
