What your skin care routine says about you (and your skin)

You can tell a lot about a person by the way they take care of their skin. From the skin care product minimalist to the shopaholic who’ll try a new product weekly, your skin care routine will have a great effect not only on your skin today, but for years to come.

“I only use cleanser… that’s all I need.”

YOU’RE A MINIMALIST: Sure, we’d all love to streamline our routines to the bare minimum. And getting by with just a foam cleanser may have seemed OK when you were a kid, but as we age, our skin needs much more in order to function and look its best.

Your Skin’s Future: You don’t need to stockpile a ton of products onto your bathroom counter, but you do need to step up your skin care routine to include a few more products to keep your skin looking young. Try our Great Skin Starter Kits – it includes the daily essentials for your skin type, all packed into one easy kit. Plus, it includes 1 full-size product for free.

“I’ve used the same products every day for years.”

YOU’RE STUCK. Your skin changes significantly as it ages – its natural exfoliation process slows, oil production decreases, and it gets thinner. Your skin even changes over the year with the seasons, so it may require products that can deliver more hydrating, or more anti-aging benefits as time goes by.

Your Skin’s Future: Take a good look at your skin – how is it aging? Do you see more lines and wrinkles? Dehydration? And pay attention to changes in the season. You can greatly benefit from a more hydrating facial cleanser or emollient facial moisturizer in the winter months, or, in contrast, a cleanser or moisturizer for more oil production in warmer months.

“I love trying new products to see what works. I’ll try a new product almost every week.”

YOU’RE A ‘TREND-SEEKER’. And that’s fine when it comes to clothing, but not when comes to your complexion.

Your Skin’s Future: When you “cherry pick” skin care products from dozens of different lines, you can confuse your skin – and do more harm that good – never giving it the time it needs for a product to actually work. Use one professional skin care line, and don’t jump from product to product.

“I switch up products during the year as the weather changes, and will add in new professional products as needed if I see any new concerns (my skin care professional is a big help).”

YOU’RE DEDICATED: Whether it’s hormonal or seasonal changes in your skin, you’re prepared to take them on with the help of a skin care professional. That means you’re also probably getting regular professional spa facials, too.

Your Skin’s Future: It looks good! Your skin gets the benefit of professional exfoliating on an ongoing basis, and smoother, more radiant skin is a result of the professional massage included in your facials. Keep adapting your skin care routine to any concerns you see, and stick to the professional skin care line that’s keeping your skin clear and younger-looking.

I have Dermatographic Urtcaria “skin writing” skin. I am getting married in exactly one year 🙂 & was wondering what would be the best products for me? I know the is no fast fix for this, but hoping for something that will calm it. (my chest can be really bad at times.) We just started carrying Bioelements at the salon I work at, so I am trying to get a feel for all the products as well. Thanks!

Hi Julie – Due to your sensitivity to pressure and touch, skin warmth induced by aggravation and possible itchiness, I suggest our Calmitude Hydrating Solution and Calmitude Sensitive Skin Moisturizer.

Both products are dermatologist approved for sensitivity and irritancy and work together to weightlessly hydrate, smooth, discourage visible irritation, strengthen skin’s protective barrier and importantly, reduce redness.

Supporting options for these two products include Stress Solution (keep it in the fridge and layer under the moisturizer), application of chilled GelTherapy Mask to cool skin when it is especially over reactive, and if you’re a licensed pro or free to order through your salon’s esthetician, Immediate Comfort, a 1% pharmaceutical grade hydrocortisone lotion.

You never know – this condition may yet go away – one of our Learning Coaches had it years ago and hasn’t experienced symptoms in years!

I’m 25, and I haven’t been the best to my skin. I’m paying more attention now and our salon carries Bioelements products, which I love. I have a routine that I have started and stuck to: A.M. a sensitive skin cleanser, equalizer, lutein indoor cream, and multitask eye cream. PM Makeup dissolver, Sensitive skin cleanser, toner, sleepwear, sleepwear for eyes. I also use measured micrograins once a week and restorative clay once a month. I have also considered stress solution because sometimes I just have days where my skin gets irritated and red.

I have sensitive/combo skin (more on the dry side), have sunburned my face more times than I can count, and would often sleep with eye makeup and mascara on.

Am I doing to much considering I am only 25? I’ve read a lot about doing too much before you enter your 30s and 40s because your skin will get used to treatments. Is that true? I appreciate any advice!

I don’t think that 25 is too early to take care of your skin! (Good skin care habits should start in childhood). What you are doing so far is great – however, the one product that is missing, and that you absolutely need is a broad spectrum sunscreen. Based on your skin type, I would choose our RayDefense SPF 30. If you enjoy being outdoors, and especially since you’ve experienced sunburns, you need to protect your skin every single day (rain or shine!) with sunscreen. The other thing I would change about what you are doing is to recommend that you never go to bed without removing your eye makeup and mascara. This is very important! When you sleep with a dirty face and eye area, you run the risk of irritation, clogging your pores, and premature aging of the eye area. Remove your eye makeup with Gentle Creme Eye Makeup Remover – all it takes is seconds – and you can also remove your face makeup with this product. I think you’ll see a huge difference, and also maintain healthy and youthful skin into your 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and way beyond. Since you work at a spa that carries Bioelements, lucky you! You can also get a professional Bioelements Facial and be under the guidance of a licensed esthetician- she/he will ensure that the products being used on your skin are the best, based on your age and lifestyle. Good luck and good skin!
