The right skin care routine order + amounts (Infographic)

Do you run out of skin care products quickly? Feel like you don’t receive the full benefits? When you apply too much, or in the incorrect order, you can do your skin (and your wallet) harm. Read on to learn the correct skin care routine order and how much skin care is too much.

The structure of your skin is built to only absorb a limited amount of active ingredients.

“Applying too much product can inhibit proper penetration, leading to less effective results. Depending on the product chosen, a light application is beneficial. It allows the skin to use these active ingredients quickly and easily. If applied too heavy it can lead to an undesirable effect, like breakouts or irritation.” – Barbara Arnoux, Bioelements Educator and licensed medical esthetician

Even if the specific product doesn’t irritate your skin or cause breakouts, any excess product will sit on top of the skin and evaporate, which wastes your money! When you use high quality, professional grade skin care, like Bioelements, you don’t need to glob on large amounts. Less is more when there’s a high concentration of active ingredients.

The sequence in which you apply your skin care also plays a key role in its effectiveness. For example, if you apply a heavy moisturizer before you apply a lightweight serum, the majority of the serum’s active ingredients will evaporate before reaching the skin, which renders the serum less beneficial.

But how much skin care is too much? And what are the right skin care routine steps?

Scroll down to see our guide to the perfect skin care routine order and the amount of each product you should use.

How to layer skin care the right way

The correct skin care routine order + how much skin care to use

In the morning:

Step 1: Cleanse

  • Apply two pumps of cleanser to wet skin and massage over face. Rinse.

Step 2: Tone

  • Apply 2-3 spritzes all over the face, neck, and v-area. Gently massage into the skin. If you have sensitive skin and use Calmitude Hydrating Solution, don’t massage the toner in and instead apply your next product immediately after you spritz the toner.

Step 3: Skin Serums & Treatment Cremes

  • Apply an amount the size of a pea and spread in a thin layer over your face or problem area. For eye products, apply an amount half the size of a pea.

Step 4: Moisturize/Broad Spectrum Sunscreen

  • Wondering how much moisturizer to use? To avoid using too much moisturizer, apply the size of a chickpea to the face and neck.
  • For broad spectrum sunscreen apply a couple of pea-size amounts to the face and a shot glass-size amount on the entire body.

In the evening:

Step 1: Cleanse

  • Apply using the same amount and technique as you do in the AM.

Step 2: Tone

  • Apply using the same amount and technique as you do in the AM.

Step 3: Exfoliate (1-3 times a week)

  • For physical exfoliators, apply the size of a pea to moist skin and gently massage. Rinse off with water.
  • For chemical exfoliators, apply one pump in a thin layer to the face. Do not rinse off.

Step 4: Mask (1-3 times a week)

  • Apply the size of a chickpea to the face and leave on for 10-15 minutes depending on the mask. Rinse well.

Step 5: Moisturize

  • Apply using the same amount and technique as you do in the AM.

Step 6: Nighttime anti-aging and brightening

For the evening I have switched step 5 and 6. So, I need to moisturize before Quick Refiner?!

Hi Katherine! What you’re doing is correct. Quick Refiner is an exfoliator, so it’s a product to use in step 3. We’ll edit this so it’s not mentioned in step 6. Thanks!

Where would you place Plump
Start in the am & pm regimen? And how often?

Hi Christi, Great question! Plump Start™ can be used in two different ways. At night, I would first apply the Quick Refiner and let it dry down. You can then apply a generous amount of Plump Start all over your face and neck as a skin-plumping infusion. You may decide to use it alone, or apply a moisturizer on top. It’s up to you, based on what your skin needs. During the day, you can apply after cleansing and toning, and underneath your serums/treatment cremes, moisturizer and sunscreen. Here again, you have some play. Depending on what serums or treatment crèmes you apply in the morning, you can either layer them or alternate, depending on how your skin feels.

Hi there! Reply to:

If you are using The LightPlex GigaWatt or MegaWatt, this product should be applied to clean skin after cleansing and toning for maximum absorption. Then apply whichever serum, moisturizer or sunscreen afterwards.

I have the starter kit, pure refiner, oxygenation and plump start. I’m not sure how in what order to use the products? Can I use them all, day and night.

Hi! I have the dry, so it includes the measured migrograins, toner, cleanser and crucial moisture.

Great! Then you can do the following: Every AM: Cleanse with Moisture Positive Cleanser, then Toner, then follow with your Plump Start and finish with Crucial Moisture and/or your Broad Spectrum Sunscreen. Every PM: Cleanse, Quick Refiner, let dry. Toner, Plump Start and Oxygenation. If you want to use Measured Micrograins, every 4th week, stop using your Quick Refiner and in the evening a few times that week, Cleanse, use Measured Micrograins and rinse with water. Toner, Plump Start and then finish with Oxygenation. Your skin is going to look and feel AMAZING! If you have more questions, just let us know. Teresa

Hi! I have the multi task eye creams, youth serum and plump start. Which order should I use them in to get the best results?

You can layer both Plump Start and Age Activist Clinical Youth Serum in any order to your skin (after cleansing and toning), day or night. Follow it with a broad spectrum sunscreen in the morning, or a moisturizer in the evening if needed. You can also alternate between Plump Start and Age Activist Clinical Youth Serum (applying one in the morning and one in the evening, or alternating days) depending on your preferences.

You can apply Multi-Task Eye Creme right before or after you apply Plump Start/Age Activist Clinical Youth Serum, as neither serum is created for the eye area. We recommend wearing Multi-Task Eye Creme every morning.

I always cleanse, then exfoliate, and then use my toner. If I use my toner before the exfoliating mask, is the toner rubbing off with the mask? Would I need to reapply toner? And it’s 2sprays enough toner (Power Peptide)? Thanks!
