How to use a face serum the right way

2

Do you know how to use a face serum the right way? Serums are perhaps one of the most versatile skin care products out there. There are many different types of serums and their uses and benefits vary greatly. Learn everything you need to know about how to use a serum and more in this Skin Care 101 guide to serums.

What is a serum?

Facial serums are lightweight, highly concentrated products formulated to deliver a higher dosage of beneficial ingredients to the skin. They are usually lightweight in consistency. Serums can be used to target more specific skin concerns than your basic daily skin care routine.

The first step to achieving great skin is to always cleanse, tone, and moisturize twice daily and apply SPF in the morning with the appropriate products for your skin type. However, serums can tackle deep concerns and bring your skin to the next level. Think of them as an extra boost that you can add to your daily agenda.

What is serum used for?

Many immediately think “anti-aging” at the mention of a serum, but serums can tackle much more than just lines and wrinkles. Sensitivities, breakouts, dryness, and excess oil are no match for a high quality serum.

Benefits of face serum

There are many different face serum benefits and they vary based on the formula you choose. Depending on the formula, your serum can:

  • Brighten
  • Hydrate
  • Smooth
  • Minimize Pores
  • Firm
  • Target fine lines and wrinkles
  • Dry out and clear acne
  • Prevent new blemishes from forming
  • Boost the efficiency of your moisturizer
  • Fight premature age signs
  • Help skin look taut
  • Protect skin against visible irritation
  • Soothe sensitivities
  • Boost skin’s resistance to environmental irritants
  • Help skin look healthy
  • Boost age-fighting properties
  • Clarify skin
  • Defend against dullness
  • Scavenge skin aging free radicals
  • Deliver a continuous veil of hydration
  • Plump skin up

PRO TIP: Certain serums can also double as a makeup primer, like Recovery Serum. This moisture-sealing serum can even be used to soften rough cuticles and add sleek shine to your hair.

The benefits of face serums are almost endless, but do you know how to use a face serum?

Again, depending on the formula there are many different ways to use your serum. However, in general, you should cleanse and tone your skin, then apply an amount of serum roughly the size of a pea and spread in a thin layer over your face or problem area. Then follow with your moisturizer and/or broad spectrum sunscreen depending on the time of day.

Types of face serums

Serums more closely align with your individual skin concerns, rather than your skin type. This means someone may have several different serums that they can use. That being said you should always check to make sure a serum is compatible with your skin type, especially if sensitive, before purchasing.

Hi there,

For my night routine, I have been using quick refiner and sleepware after washing and toning. I just ordered the Age Activist
Clinical Youth Serum. I assume because it contains retinol that I shouldn’t use them together, correct?

Actually, Aimee, to continue the benefits of the retinol, you can wear the Age Activist Clinical Youth Serum during the day, underneath your moisturizer/sunscreen and continue to wear the Sleepwear as you have done at night.
