How to get better skin: All about resistive skin

3

Do you struggle with resistive, stubborn skin – like you’ve hit a plateau and stopped seeing visible results? You’re not alone. Most people deal with stubborn, resistive, or lackluster skin at some point in their lives. Keep reading to learn how to push past the plateau and how to get better skin.

Signs of resistive and stubborn skin

Sometimes, your skin can hit a phase where it just seems “stuck,” and results are less visible. This is due to skin becoming resistive and stubborn over time.

“Skin is a very adaptable organ. It’s self-cleansing, self-healing and self-regenerating. As a live organ, it needs to breathe, take in nutrients and rid itself of waste to be healthy. And professional skin care helps the skin to function at its best.

However, being so adaptable, it tends to grow more tolerant and resistive over time, especially if the products you use at home are not appropriate.” –Teresa Stenzel, Bioelements Director of Education

Some signs your skin has become resistant are:

  • Skin becomes congested and full of blackheads or clogged pores
  • It’s less able to absorb ingredients and shows less visible results from your skin care
  • Skin can feel puffy due to lymphatic drainage slowing down
  • It can appear lackluster in color and tone
  • Skin feels sensitive or irritated

“Resistive skin tends to show signs of dehydration, sluggishness, and congestion below skin’s surface. It is skin that you and your esthetician need to ‘wake-up’.

However, beware – you can end up in dangerous waters if you too much too quickly. Resistive skin can be reactive or sensitive, so it’s important to coax the skin into shape, rather than assault it with overly harsh products. Plus, no two people are identical, so pay attention to your skin on that particular day.” –Alina Houtz, Senior Esthetician, Jordan Thomas Salon & Spa

How to get better skin: In the treatment room

We reached out to Bioelements skin care professionals to learn how they deal with resistive, lackluster skin in the treatment room:

“Like I said, no two people are the same, but there is a certain group of products I believe work on most people with resistive skin. During a facial when someone has stubborn skin, I like to mix a pro-use-only exfoliator with the appropriate cleanser to kick start sluggish skin right from the beginning of the treatment.

I also choose specific Bioelements massage products and techniques that help stimulate nerve endings and move lymphatic drainage to help clients achieve the results they want – both in the treatment room and at-home.

For resistive skin types I tend to use Bioelements Oxygenation during the Power Treatment step of the facial and for at-home use after the facial. It revitalizes dull, sluggish, sleepy skin.”Alina Houtz

“Personally, I love to perform the Bioelements Ultra Detox Charcoal Peels followed by stress solution and SPF (at the end of the treatment and at home). This pushes resistive skin to achieve the results they want and totally cools and calms irritation.” –Kim West Pigue, Licensed Esthetician & Owner, Kimmie’s Professional Skin Care

“The reason you should get a Bioelements facial for ANY skin type or concern, but especially resistive skin, is because your esthetician will use Custom Blending to specifically tailor your treatment AND your at-home skin care to your needs. Plus, they will be able to notice what your skin is telling them from the beginning to the end of the treatment and help push your skin in the right direction. It’s one of the best ways to get past the dreaded skin plateau.” Alina Houtz

How to get better skin: At-home

It is important to ask yourself these questions when selecting the right at-home skin care products for you:

  • Are you wearing sunscreen every day? This is the single most important step of any skin care routine, both for appearance and for overall health.
  • Does your skin type or characteristics change from season to season? Does it get drier in the winter months and oilier during the summer? This is a sign that you need to adjust your skin care based on the seasons (as most people need to).
  • Are you using the correct products based on your current skin condition, or are you using the same products you’ve always used? Skin changes over time – the products that once worked for you in your youth may not work the same way as you age.

Once you find the right daily routine for your skin type and concerns, these four products are the best way to give resistive skin a boost to achieve the results you want:

Skin Editor

Skin Editor’s incredibly elegant leave-on formula features dual-depth penetrating 3% glycolic and 7% lactic acid, plus the added bonus of brightening fermented black tea extract (kombucha) and soothing free-radical fighter Canadian willowherb – all enveloped within hydrating organic shea butter.

Want better skin in a week? This powerful exfoliator works to edit skin imperfections and long-term damage to instantly smooth rough and bumpy texture, diminish dullness, brighten dark damage, improve clarity + color, target congestion, hydrate, and reduce the look of lines – all without harsh skin-stripping or surface-scraping.

Oxygenation

Oxygenation revitalizes dull, sluggish, sleepy skin with stabilized hydrogen peroxide and pure lavender oil. This boost of essential oxygen diffuses directly into skin’s cellular layers. As the molecules “push” their way down, they transport active ingredients into the skin. Gives skin exhausted by age, stress, or smoke a clean, fresh feeling with refined radiance. Consider it a breath of fresh air for sapped skin.

You can use Oxygenation three different ways: after exfoliating or masking to infuse tired, aging skin with much-needed oxygen, over acne treatments to push active ingredients deeper and purify pores, or alone as a moisturizer since the formula is so hydrating.

It’s a single solution that empowers skin to resist the signs of cell aging.

This coalition of youth-advocating ingredients rally together to brighten, hydrate, exfoliate to smooth roughness, improve the appearance of lines and pores, and target collagen for firmer, more elastic skin.

Used 2-3 times per week Kerafole will reveal new radiance – skin will appear brighter and feel smoother, impurities vanish, pores improve and skin feels revitalized.  However, to really kick start stubborn, sluggish skin, apply Kerafole every day for 7 consecutive days to perform the Kerafole Purge.

I recently switched from age activist youth serum to skin editor. And now my face is irritated and bumpy. It was looking great before. I usually have acne. The youth serum made my face look smooth and zi only had one pimple. I ran out so I bought skin editor. I thought it would reduce my scarring and smooth my skin even more. It is kind of burning and definitely bumpy all over. Especially in chin and forehead. It’s under the skin. What do I do?
Thanks

We don’t recommend Skin Editor for those with traditional acne due to the shea butter in the formula, we only recommend it for people who have congestion/blackheads because it’s great for that. Definitely switch back to Age Activist Clinical Youth Serum if that was working for you before. If you still have breakouts, switch your cleanser and toner to Spotless Cleanser and Acne Toner and add in a spot treatment like Breakout Control for really stubborn pimples: https://www.bioelements.com/what-is-my-skin-type–pages-58.php?type=acne_skin
