The No Surgery Face Lift: Erase Your Fine Lines and Wrinkles Part 2
October 5, 2011
Even though the cool winds of fall are blowing in most parts of the country, it's time to think spring.Yes, spring 2012. At New York Fashion Week, it wasn't just the looks via the clothing, but The Look for next year as in giving great face. The Carolina Herrera show demonstrated that 2012's best accessory is glowing skin or what some are dubbing "the return of pretty."
It's time to get your glow on with a skin care regime you can start now that guarantees you maximum wattage in 2012. I asked celebrity skin care guru Jillian Wright, who has zapped and exfoliated Kristen Wiig, Tea Leoni, Ivana Trump, Alicia Silverstone, and Virginia Madsen plus thousands of other clients, for some major tips. Yesterday, she talked about her favorite cleansers, moisturizers and serums. Consider today: Advanced Credit Glow-o-logy.
SGS:Does it pain you when you see women ignore their post 40 skin care or just rinse with whatever is on the sink?
JW: "In our 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond, we take pride in the way our bodies look and pride in the way we dress. There are so many things we take pride in. I don't understand why woman let their skin go. It's about being prideful."
SGS:I must admit to once buying the ultra expensive serum from a certain grapevine only found in France …only to find out it was basically just cream. What's the weirdest thing you've been pitched to have in your clinic?
JW:"There was a company trying to sell me snail excretions for skin care. I'm always skeptical if the product is too high end or has animal byproducts."
SGS:Yesterday, you talked about a basic skin care routine. Women are still a little miffed by how much exfoliation and how over 40. Any advice?
JW :"Exfoliation is important. You can do it at home with a really nice granulated scrub to remove dead skin cells. I think you should exfoliate on your own once or twice a week. The key is to gently slough off dead skin cells. A mask won't accomplish this, so think of a mask as a treat. The scrub is essential for exfoliation. Bioelements has a great product called Pumice Peel for all skin types. Rhonda Allison has a brightening scrub that my clients absolutely love. St. Ives also makes a nice scrub that offers microdermabrasion minerals. Just make sure you're using something that exfoliates that doesn't lacerate the skin. Don't cut into your skin."
SGS:Should women invest in little machines for at home laser treatments and exfoliation?
JW:"My clients who use the Clarisonic Skin Cleansing brush have cleaner skin and nicer skin. I also like a hand held LED light machine from Omnilux MD. The red light rejuvenates the skin and works on fine lines and wrinkles. It's really great."
SGS:How often should women over 45 have a professional facial?
JW: "Once a month. You need professional facials and you should be religious about it. Find yourself a master esthetician in your town with at least five years of experience. This person will look at your skin and know what to do. Basically, you want to tell your esthetician that your goals are to have skin that's soft and strong, exfoliated and hydrated."
SGS:What is the most important rule of over 40 skin care?
JW: "You can't take away without putting back. You can't just cleanse and exfoliate. You have to put back ingredients to help improve your skin."
SGS:Give us one Hollywood insider skin care tip?
JW:"Deal with the hair on your face. Facial hair is one of the signs of getting older. It can be very unsightly and annoying. Many actresses get their faces threaded and waxed. It gives such as smooth finish. I really do like the Olay Facial Hair Removal Duo. It literally fits into your back pocket. It's a two-step process. There's a balm you put on your skin around your mouth line or skin and then you massage it in. Then you put on a depilatory. This guardian balm allows you to do this process without turning your skin red. You can do it anywhere…anytime. The balm looks like a stick of lip-gloss. It's a great thing for women who are older and are experiencing facial hair for the first time."
SGS:All of us have stressful lives and I know this ages your skin rapidly. If you can't just move to a farm – and face it, milking cows would also be stressful—what should we do?
JW:"Stress will age you. So will lack of sleep. To de-stress, I suggest physical activity like yoga or core fusion or even running or walking. You need to find some way to decompress. As women, we have a lot more responsibility these days. We travel a lot and take care of so much and so many people. You'll see the stress under your eyes in fine lines. That's why as you try to de-stress with activities and relaxation or sleep, it's also helpful to buy a really great eye-cream or eye gel. I like a line from Environ called C-Quence. I also like Marini Anti-Aging serum. They have a capsule that you pop open for eyes. It's one of the best products for dark circles.
SGS:In the end, how do we glow forever?
JW:"It's also about living your life. At this age, we're moms, daughters and professionals. We travel. We race around. We like to go to wine tastings in Napa. All of it isn't good for us. It's really about living your life in moderation and enjoying yourself. It's not always about breaking your back and going, 'Oh my gosh…am I doing the right thing?'"
"Trust and rely on the products you're using," she says. "And most of all stay young in your heart and mind. That really shows."
